Prince Arthur's Landing ice rink almost ready to open

The recent chilly spell in Thunder Bay could see skaters lacing up by the weekend.

Flooding of outdoor rinks continue, but those won't open until next month

The recent chilly spell in Thunder Bay could see skaters lacing up by the weekend.

The city expects the rink at Prince Arthur's Landing will open in a couple of days.

The ice plant there has been running since Monday, and crews have been flooding the ice for the past few days.

City parks manager Paul Fayrick said boarded rinks around the city are also getting their first flooding of the season, which means they should be ready for skating earlier than normal.

But Fayrick noted outdoor rink shacks won't open until the middle of next month.

"The frost is getting in the ground. We've got crews out starting to do the flooding primarily on our boarded rinks, he said.

Our staff don't go out on site, on shift until the middle of December, but in the meantime, we're getting the rinks up and running."

The lighting at the boarded rinks won't be turned on until next month, he added.

The lights are the last things we put up, just for a safety measure, Fayrick said.

So [during] the daytime [and] weekend ... there's likely to be skating or right after school."
