Building evacuated, roads closed after acid spill near Bloor and Lansdowne

About 40 people took shelter in a TTC bus after an acid spill near Bloor Street West and Lansdowne Avenue forced them to evacuate from a building, Toronto Fire Services says.

The spill took place at the Nitta Gelatin factory on Paton Roadat about 10 a.m.

"Chemicals, including sulphuric acid, were accidentally mixed together and the combination caused a chemical mist to fill the air," said the company in a statement.

After initially telling nearby residents to stay in their houses, Toronto police confirmed in the early afternoon that it was safe to be outside and that the spill hadbeen contained to one area.

Toronto Fire Services saidthat there wereno serious injuries as a result of the spill, but that eight people were treated for minor throat and eye irritation.

Nitta Gelatin saidthis is the first incident of its kind in its history.

The area ofLansdowneAvenue,PatonRoad,JenetAvenue and Wade Avenue was closed for much of the day, but had re-opened as of 2:30 p.m.
