Adam Vaughan to exit city council for run at federal seat

Adam Vaughan will resign from city council today, so that he can fully devote himself to a run at a federal seat in Ottawa.

Vaughan will be one of the names on the ballot for voters in theJune 30byelection in the Toronto riding of Trinity-Spadina. He is the Liberal candidate in that riding.

Vaughan appeared Tuesday on CBC Radio's Metro Morning show, telling host Matt Galloway he plans to push for a better housing policy.

"I want to deliver a program back to Toronto and all the other cities to deliver a real housing program," he said. "In Toronto the needs are magnificent and if we had a federal partner, the work I did in the ward over the last eight years would have been much better.

"Too many MPs have gone off to Ottawa and forgotten that they're representing Toronto," said Vaughan. "In fact they come back and explain why they can't do anything for Toronto because you have to understand the national dynamic."

As ofMondayevening, the city website listed nine people who had registered to run for councillor in Ward 20 Trinity-Spadina. Vaughan had not registered to run.

Trinity-Spadina was held by Olivia Chow, who resigned earlier this year to run for mayor.

Vaughan's main opponent is expected to be Joe Cressy of the NDP.
