Charges laid in deadly accident at future TTC station

Two companies are facing charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) stemming from a construction accident that killed a 24-year-old worker on the York University campus last fall.

It took emergency crews took 14 hours to free Knox's body.

Five people were also injured in the incident, one of whom was treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The Ontario Ministry of Labour announced Friday it was layingfour charges under the OHSA against both Advanced Construction Techniques Inc. and OHL-FCC GP Canada Inc.

The ministry said in a statement the two companies had allegedly failed to "design an adequate work platform" for the mobile drill, failed to ensure that the drill "was operated in accordance with the operators manual" and neglected to design and carry out the project so that it could handle "all loads or forces" it would likely be subject to.

Representatives for the companies are scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 1.
