Mayoral candidate Chloe Brown makes her pitch to lead Toronto on Metro Morning

Mayoral hopeful Chloe Brown outlined her vision for Toronto on CBC Radio's Metro Morning Friday, saying she is the only candidate who will stand up for the working class and elevate residents' quality of life.

Brown took 3rd spot in 2022 mayoral election, earning nearly 35,000 votes

Mayoral hopeful Chloe Brown outlined her vision for Toronto on CBC Radio's Metro Morning Friday, saying she is the only candidate who will stand up for the working class and elevate residents' quality of life.

"People don't want to be lied to anymore about the state of the city," Brown told guest host Jill Dempsey.

"We want better solutions."

Brown said that recent mayors have tried to run the city like a business and it now "feels like a tourist attraction" for the wealthy, with deteriorating services for the working class.

Brown, a policy analyst, took the third spot in the 2022 mayoral election, earning nearly 35,000 votes.

She said her plan also includes:

  • Giving local communities more power in the planning process, particularly in the form of land trusts that would hand long-term control of land to non-profit groups and tenant associations.
  • Revamp how property taxes work in the city, shifting toward a "more accurate location-based assessment"that considers nearby amenities.
  • Imposing higher taxes onwhat she calls "unproductive lands," like empty lots and storefronts.
  • Use city-owned land like libraries, recreation centres and TTC properties as sites for affordable housing development.
