Uber driver faces 4 charges in fatal Gardiner collision

Toronto police charged an Uber driver on Wednesday in connection with a fatal collision on the Gardiner Expressway last week.

Ride-sharing company says it is looking further into the situation, driver's access to app removed

Toronto police charged an Uberdriver on Wednesday in connection with a fatal collision on theGardinerExpressway last week.

Police said the 23-year-old Ottawa man ischarged with:

  • Dangerous driving causingdeath.
  • Criminal negligence causingdeath.
  • Dangerous driving causingbodily harm.
  • Criminal negligence causingbodily harm.

Police were called to the scene of thecollisionlast Wednesday on the westboundGardiner,east of Royal York Road.

The two-vehicle collision occurred when a car on the shoulder lane of the highway collided with another vehicle while trying to merge onto the highway,Const. ClintStibbepreviously toldCBCToronto.

Nicholas Cameron was killed in the collision, his mother Cheryl Hawkesconfirmed to CBCToronto on Wednesday.

She said her sonwas taking an Uber to the airport when the collision occurred. When asked if the ride-hailing app has reached out to the family, Hawkes told CBCToronto Uber has not.

Responding to inquiries byCBCToronto,Ubersaid in a statement: "Our hearts are with all those grieving for the loss of their loved one following this horrible tragedy. We will support the police investigation in every way possible."

Uber also said it is looking further into this situation and that the driver's access to the app was removed.

Cameronwas taken to the hospital with critical injuries but succumbed the next day.Three other occupants of the two vehicles were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The man charged was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

Hawkessaid people can make donations in Cameron's honour to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.Cameron is the son of lateCBCTorontoanchor Bill Cameron, andHawkes, who wasa longtime formerCBCreporter and producer.
