Fentanyl among opioids allegedly stolen in Simcoe, Ont.

Provincial police are trying to locate a man who allegedly stole a large quantity of prescription opioids, including fentanyl, from a drug store in Simcoe, Ont.

Ontario Provincial Police are looking for a man who allegedly stole a "large quantity" of prescription opioids from a Shoppers Drug Mart in Simcoe, Ont.

Authoritiessay the man approached a pharmacy employee and displayed a weapon on Saturday night.

They say he took off with fentanyl and hydromorphone from the drug store in Simcoe, which is located about150 kilometres southwest of Toronto.

Fentanyl is said to be 50 to 100 times more powerful than morphine and about 40 times more potent than heroin.

This year saw a spike in fentanyl overdoses in Western Canada, and police in Toronto have been warning the public about the "devastating impact" associated with abuse of the drug.
