Man topples onto subway tracks along with mobility scooter

A man and his electric mobility scooter toppled onto the tracks of a subway station in downtown Toronto on Monday afternoon, leaving him with a serious leg injury.

The incident occurred during the mid-afternoon at College station.

Elena Siviero was a passenger on a northbound subway train that came to a halt after the incident unfolded on the other side of the line.

Siviero said she caught the aftermath of the incident, which prompted three people on the platform to jump down onto the tracks to help the injured man.

"He was lying on his back, I believe," she told reporters outside College station. "There were two men with him and a woman who someone said was a nurse."

Siviero said the man was "screaming" and indicating that his leg was in pain.

"He was screaming really loud. It was scary," she said.

Toronto firefighters would take the man off the tracks on a backboard.

Fire Captain Mike Strapko told CBC News that the man had just disembarked from a subway train and attempted to use the elevator.

The elevator wasn't working and the man attempted to turn around to go back on the subway so he could go to another station. That's when he fell onto the tracks, Strapko said.
