Ontario government commits extra $1.1B to repair schools

The province of Ontario is investing an extra $1.1 billion over a two-year period to fix up schools in need of repairs.

The province of Ontario is investing an extra $1.1 billion over a two-year periodto fix up schools in need of repairs.

In a statement released Monday, the Ontario government said the funding will be added to the $1.6 billion already allocated to upgrades and renewals for a combined $2.7 billion in spending.

"Investing in our schools is one of the most important infrastructure investments we can make for nearly two million students in Ontario," said Education Minister Mitzie Hunter.

According to the province, the money will go towards repairing roofs, updating HVAC units, modernizing electrical and plumbing systems along with improving the look and condition of buildings.

"Our government believes in better buildings for better learning and well-being." Hunter said. "Making sure schools across the province are in a state of good repair is an essential part of supporting student achievement."
