Suspect in subway pushing to appear in mental-health court

The man charged with attempted murder after two teens were pushed onto subway tracks in Toronto will appear before a mental-health court on Friday.

Adenir DeOliveira, 47, is charged with three counts of attempted murder and two counts of assault.

He was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation when he appeared in court on the weekend.

On Tuesday, DeOliveiraattended a bail court designated for individuals identified as having mental-health issues. The judge ordered that he be remanded back into police custody and that he appear before the mental-health court again on Friday.

A court order was issued Saturday preventing the naming of the teens he is alleged to have pushed, or their relatives.

Meanwhile, the teens are still coming to grips with their close call at Dufferin station, which has left them traumatized, they said.

One of the three boys who was pushed, who was able to avoid falling to the tracks,feels "awful," he told CBC Tuesday.

"I just hope no one has to go through it ever again."

His mother said he can't bring himself to ride the subway to school.

"He's had such a trauma that he's unable to take the train," she said.

The boy was able to keep his balance, but saw his two friends fall beneath the platform into the path of an oncoming train.

They were able to scramble to safety beneath thelip of the platform.

One boy suffered serious injury to his foot. He's expected to undergo surgeryTuesday to save two of his toes.

The teens were standing on the platform when a man approached without saying a word and pushed them.

Friends of the boys then chased after a man who ran through the station "yelling and screaming" andwho subsequently tried to assault a ticket collector, Toronto Transit Commissionspokesman Brad Ross said Friday.

The collector and a bystander finally tackled the man outside and held him for police.
