Toronto cyclists hold 'die-in' at Nathan Phillips Square

Cyclists gathered at Nathan Phillips Square on Friday morning to protest three fatal collisions involving cyclists in the past several weeks.

Cyclists gatheredat Nathan Phillips Square on Friday morning to protest threefatal collisions involving cyclists in the past several weeks.

More than 100 cyclists lay on the ground with their bicycles in a silent "die-in,"CBC'sLinda Ward reported from the scene.

Advocateswant the city's cycling budget increased from $8 million to $20 million, and a minimum grid of 100 km of separated bike lanes.

"The goal of today is tosend a very clearmessage tocity hall that we need greater action to reduce road fatalities," said Jared Kolb of CycleToronto.

It's been a deadly spring for cyclists in the city.

  • On June 13, 26-year-old Adam Excellwas struck and killed near Avenue and Davenport roads.The car leftthe scene and an arrest was announced the next day.
  • On June 11, a womanallegedly fled acollision at Finch Avenue West and Tobermory Roadafter hitting and killing a 44-year-old cyclist. Thedriverwas later arrested and faces nine charges.
  • OnMay 19, Toronto architect Roger du Toit was struckat the intersection of Wrentham Place and Roxborough Street East. He died on May 31.
