Toronto island airport renamed after Billy Bishop

Toronto's island airport officially changed its name on Tuesday to honour First World War flying ace Billy Bishop.

Toronto's island airport officially changed its name on Tuesday to honour First World War flying ace Billy Bishop.

"Billy Bishop was one of our first war heroes, and he set the stage for today, where thousands of other men and women in uniform put their lives on the line for Canadian values and the defence of others," said Mark McQueen, chairman of the Toronto Port Authority in a written statement.

"The Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is dedicated as much to Canada's veterans and active service military personnel as it is to its namesake, who inspired a young nation with his courage and dedication," said McQueen.

The airport, located on a small island just off Toronto's downtown, is operated by the TPA, which made the decision to rename the facility earlier this year. The airport was also a training base for Allied pilots during the Second World War.

Bishop, who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his exploits during the First World War, was credited with 72 victories, making him Canada's top ace.

Arthur Bishop, Billy Bishop's son, said the family is "deeply touched" by the honour, especially coming as it does "the day before the solemn tribute of Remembrance Day."

The TPA said it expects the name change to be finalized on Feb. 11, 2010, with an official renaming ceremony later in the year.
