Toronto patio shooting survivor wasn't target

A man wounded in a deadly daylight shooting in Toronto's Little Italy this week wasn't the gunman's intended target, police said Wednesday.

The man, whose name hasn't been released, was shot because he was "in the general area" during what police are calling a targeted attack against John Raposo.

The injured man is expected to survive.Raposo, however, died from a shot to the head.

Const. Victor Kwong said Raposo, 35, was "known to police" but would not elaborate.

Media reports suggest he may have had ties to organized crime but did not belong to a group himself.

Monday's shooting outside the Sicilian Sidewalk Cafe took place as dozens of soccer fans gathered at the gelato shop to watch a European Championship game.

The shop's CEO, Maria Galipo, said she hoped the community would move past the shock and fear stirred up by the attack.

"If we as a city allow an isolated act of violence to keeppeople away ... then the violence wins," she said Wednesday.

Galipo said police have given the green light for the store to reopen, but added it could take a few days to get the family-owned business up and running again.

Police, meanwhile, continue to search for the gunman.

"We believe the shooter may have been loitering in the area" before the 3:30 p.m. shooting, Kwong said.

The suspect is described as male, white, six feet tall, with blond shoulder-length hair and a medium build.

He was wearing a white hard hat, an orange safety vest with a fluorescent green "X" on the front and back and had a white filter mask on his face.
