Winter-like Spring storm blankets Toronto and GTA in snow

As of 7a.m. it was6 C in the city and the snow had mostly tapered off. You might see a few more periods of snow earlythis morning before the active weather is expected to end and leave Toronto under cloudy skies.

An extreme cold weather alert was issued for Toronto around 7:30 a.m. Monday.The alert comes from the city's Medical Officer of HealthDr. DavidMcKeown andit will stay in effect until further notice.

Winter-like spring storm blankets Toronto and GTA in snow, now under an extreme cold weather alert

Residents are encouraged to dress in warm layers and to call or visit friends, neighbours and family who might be having trouble with the cold weather. Infants and young children, the homeless, people who work outdoors and those with heart or respiratory illnesses are among those at risk, officials say.

During such alerts an extra effort is made to helphomeless people to get off the street and into shelters. The alert also triggers the opening oftwo 24-hour extreme cold weather drop-ins. They will be open by 3 p.m. Monday.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for Toronto on Sunday due to the overnight snowfall, which the weather agency warnedcould amount to 10-15 centimetres of the white stuff but that advisory ended around 7 a.m. Monday.

Toronto police are reporting at least 100 collisions in the city since the snow started to fall around 5 p.m. on Sunday. Const. Clint Stibbe says those consisted of fender benders and some minor injuries.

"It boils down to the driver needing to adjust their driving for the poor conditions that they're facing, unfortunately they're still driving around like it's a dry, sunny day," said Stibbe.

"Traffic has gotten heavy really early this morning, much earlier than normal, but at the same time the road conditions have deteriorated overnight and as a result delays this morning have already begun and are quite heavy."

Many of the roads in the city were snow-covered or slushy this morning.

Just after 4:30 a.m. the city tweeted that "Two rounds of salt have been applied to arterial roads overnight. Salting operations continue." You can click on the city's website to see what roads have been plowed.

A high of 1 C is forecast for today. This evening the skies are supposed to clear off, but it will still be chilly overnight with alow of10 C.

Schools open, Caledon buses cancelled in Peel

Students hoping for a snow day will be disappointed. As of 6:20 a.m. there are no major school closures.

In Peel, buses were cancelled in Caledon but are running for Brampton and Mississauga.

Winter is coming in spring?

Don't worry Toronto, the forecast isn't showing another big dump of snow like we just saw overnight, but unfortunately temperatures will remain cool and winter-like this week.

Daytime highs are expected to hover above the freezing mark for your work week with the possibility of more snow Wednesday to Friday.
