York regional officer dies in collision

A veteran York regional police officer, who was off-duty, has been killed after a two-vehicle collision near Uxbridge.

Durham regional police say a car northbound on the York-Durham Line was hit by a pick-up travelling eastbound on Sandford Road on Thursday.

The car was driven by 54-year-old Supt. Mark Grant of Mount Albert, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

His passengera 54-year-old woman from Newmarketwas taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The 76-year-old driver of the pick-up truck, from Brechin, was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

Durham police Const. Rebecca Boyd says Grant was off-duty and was returning home from the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in Chicago.
