The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported Monday there are now 204 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor-Essex.

In an evening update, WECHU announced that two more people have died because of COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to fivefor the Windsor-Essex area.

"I send my regrets and condolences to the families of both of these individuals during this very difficult time. This is sad news for our community to lose two more residents in such a tragic way," said Dr. Wajid Ahmed, medical officer of health.

The health unit also confirmed a COVID-19outbreak at Extendicare Southwood Lakes, bringing the total number of long-term care facilities experiencing an outbreak to seven.

Overall 1,531 people have been tested and 148 tests are still pending.

Dr. Ahmed said the sudden rise in cases for the area is due to the large number of tests that have returned at once, as there was a backlog in testing. However, tests are now coming back in a timely manner and that backlog is clear.

At least 30 per cent of those cases are in health-care workers and about 16 people have recovered fully from COVID-19.

Ahmed said staff there are working hard to prevent spread of the virus.

Country Village Homes in Woodslee has been hit the hardest as 14 staff members there tested positive for COVID-19, with six cases in residents. Two residents there have died.
