Don't swim at local beaches: health unit

The health unit says it is not a good idea to swimat any of Windsor-Essex County area beaches -- except one -- because of of high E. coli levels.

The local health unit monitors ten public beaches each week during the summer to make sure the water is safe for swimming.

A sign warns swimmers of possible health risks when E. coli levels top 100 parts per 100 millilitres of water.

If those levels are higher than 1000 parts then the beach will be closed.

The only beach currently within acceptable limits is Hillman Beach in Leamington.

The next sample date is Wednesday.

The beaches with unacceptable levels of E. coli are:

• Colchester Beach - Essex
• Holiday Beach - Amherstburg
• NW Beach - Point Pelee
• Sandpoint Beach - Windsor
• Seacliff Beach - Leamington
• West Belle River Beach - Lakeshore
• Lakeside Beach - Lakeshore
