In its 25th year, the family Christmas baskets tradition will help families in need

For more than two decades, Windsor's Assumption high school hasbeen giving back to the community through its annual family Christmas baskets tradition.

"[I'm] excited and nervous at the same time," student success teacher Amy Weir told Windsor Morning host Amy Dodge. "It's a huge tradition of ours, keeping up with the Christmas spirit and making a difference in our community."

The Family Christmas Baskets tradition is in it's 25th year at Assumption High School. Amy Weir, the Student success teacher at Assumption, and students Jack Channo and Celia Ibrahim speak with CBC Windsor Morning host Amy Dodge.

During the family Christmas baskets tradition, staff, alumni and students at Assumption High School gather donations from community members, and home rooms sponsor families.

Each basket is packaged with Christmas dinners, canned goods and presents for family members. These are either picked up by or delivered to families anonymously.

"Some of it is really basic stuff,families ask for underwear socks and pyjamas," Jack Channo said, a student at Assumption. "It's really humbling I think. It really made us realize how lucky we are to have our privilege."

"It's very similar every year," fellow student Celia Ibraham added. "It's necessary to do every year... [And] it's so fun to go shop for those families, especially the little kids who are asking for colouring books or arts supplies."

"We don't know much about them, but just hoping that it makes their Christmas a little bit nicer, it's really nice to do that for other people."

Students at Assumption high school have traded cash donations for gifts for families in need. Groceries parcelled with presents are being presented to 19 families as part of the school's 25th annual family Christmas baskets tradition. Amy Weir, student success teacher at Assumption, and students Jack Channo and Celia Ibrahim spoke with Windsor Morning's Amy Dodge in studio.

"We all work as a team," she said. "It's a phenomenal tradition and we all just want to keep up those traditions with the wonderful students we work with every day."
