People in Tecumseh using Kijiji and other online marketplaces can rest easy knowing they'll be safe picking up their goods. The Ontario Provincial Police have set up a safe exchange spot at theLesperance Road detachment.

Officials with the provincial police say they want to help young buyers, the elderly and new Canadians feel safe when buying or selling something online.

The "Internet Purchase Safety Zone" is identified by two parking spots that are equipped with a light, camera and a sign.

Since 2012, Tecumseh OPP have received nearly200 calls for service related to an Internet transaction gone bad, Sgt. Brad Sakalosaid. Since a large majority of these crimes go unreported, Sakalosuggests the real number of calls could be much higher.

"There is an air of anonymity on the Internet," Sakalosaid. "You never know who you're communicating with directly unless you know the individual."

Sakalosaid there are a few tips to keep in mind when buying or selling something over the Internet, including:

  • Meet in a public place.

  • Bring cash.

  • Bring a friend.

  • Let somebody else know exactly where you're going and when you expect to be back.
