Windsor's flood damage to be assessed by provincial inspectors

There may be some relief for those who suffered damages during the flooding that hit parts of Windsor and Tecumseh, Ont. according to Ontario's municipal affairs minister.

Provincial inspectors are already visiting both communities assessing the damage with more officials expected to arrive in the coming days.

Based on those assessments, residents may be able to get financial help through the Disaster Recovery Assistance program.

"That might provide some financial assistance to individuals, small businesses and the like," saidBillMauro, Ontario's Minister of Municipal Affairs, insisting the program may not cover everyone who suffered damage. "The programs are not intended to be a replacement for insurance coverage."

Municipalities can also apply for financial assistance through the Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance Program, which is designed to help communities that spend significant resources for natural disasters.

Mauro said there appears to be more severe weather incidents that require communities to access provincial support.

"It seems as though this is becoming more the norm than abnormal," he said.
