Sexual assault policy being drafted by University of Windsor

The University of Windsor is taking more steps to eliminate sexual assault on campus by looking into developing a new policy to address the issue.

Currently the university has programs and numerous preventative strategies, but the Dean of Students Clayton Smith said a policy will help the school to enforce the rules and punish perpetrators.

"What we know though, and its very concerning, is that approximately one of every four women during the time at university will experience some form of sexual violence, either they will see it, they will be a part of it, it will be in their life," said Smith.

The new policy is expected to be in place by the end of winter.

Smith said once drafted, the policy will could lead to people being suspended and facing academic penalties for inappropriate sexual activities.

"We need to have extremely good enforcement capabilities if you will, to catch the perpetrators and deal with it in that way," said Smith.

On Monday 13 students at Dalhousie University were temporarily suspended for violent sexual comments about female classmates made on a Facebook page.
