Talks resume with striking Essex library workers

Essex CountyLibrary workers are going back to the bargaining table for the first time since talks broke down in August.

Library employees have been on strike since June 25.

Union members have said all along a proposal to have a third party look after short-term disability remains the key stumbling block at the table.

The union has called the Essex County Library Board back to the table on Wednesday to work out a deal.

"We have a proposal that we think will make both sides happy," saidLori Wightman, spokesperson for CUPE 2974.

Wightman says the libraries have been closed for too long and strikers want to get back to work.

"They're understandably tired, they're understandably frustrated," she said. "The cancellation of our benefits was a big blow."

The union has a proposal it believes will satisfy all sides and is bringing it back to the tableon Wednesday.

There are 57 union membersfrom 14 locations on the pickets.
