West Nile virus 'present throughout' Windsor-Essex, health unit says

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit says that a pair of mosquito pools in Windsor has tested positive for West Nile virus, a result that, when coupled with a prior positive test in Essex, suggests that the virus is "present throughout the region."

Two mosquito pools have tested positive for West Nile virus in Windsor.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit says the tests indicate the virus "is present throughout the region," following a prior positive finding in a mosquito pool in Essex County in June.

Residents are urged to take steps to avoid mosquito bites and to eliminate pools of standing water from their properties.

The health unit offers several tips for avoiding mosquito bites, which include spending less time outdoors at dawn and dusk, as well as using insect repellents that include either DEET or Icaridin.

To date, no human cases of West Nile virus have been reported to the health unit this year.
