Former Chatham-Kent United Way employee charged in $300K fraud

A former employee of Chatham-Kent United Way has been charged with defrauding the organization of just over $300,000.

Organization launched legal action against former employee last October

A former United Way of Chatham-Kentemployee has been charged with defrauding the organization of just over $300,000.

Chatham-Kent police say a 48-year-old woman from Tilbury, Ont.,was arrested on Feb. 2 after a "thorough investigation" of records from October 2021 to October 2022.

The investigation was sparked by a complaintaboutmisappropriation of funds from the organization.

The woman has been charged with one count of fraud over $5,000.

United Way of Chatham-Kentdeclined an interviewrequest, but said in October that an employee was no longer with the organization andthe matter had been turned over to police.

"The board and executive team takes this matter very seriously and wants to ensure transparency with our many supporters about these allegations. A civil claim is underway," the organization said at the time.
