What Windsor-Essex candidates do on the eve of election day

On the eve of election day in Ontario, some candidates say they'll ring doorbells well into the nightwhile others don't plan to canvass at all.

As CBC'sPoll Trackershowsa tight race between the PC Party and the New Democrats, with just one percentage point separating the parties on June 5,local campaigns in Windsor-Essexare working "right to the last minute."

PC candidate avoids canvassing day before election

However, Essex PC candidate Chris Lewis has instructed all of his volunteers to avoid door-knocking on Wednesday, the day before the election.

"I want to make sure that I don't break any election rules," said Lewis.

Instead,he'll spend the day thanking his supporters and calling residents to remind them to vote.

NDP Windsor-Tecumseh candidate Percy Hatfield,with two elections under his belt, said Lewis appears to be mistaken about canvassing rules. Hatfield plans to hit as many homes as he can before the polls open Thursday morning.

"That's just aneophyte candidate who doesn't know the rules and regulations and perhaps he shouldn't be running," said Hatfield.

"I'll be going door-to-door right up until after supper, until it gets close to dark," he said.

Although Hatfieldadmits most people have probably made up their mind at this point, there might be a few undecided voters he can convince. He said showing up on their doorstep could be what he needs to secure a vote.

Number system to gauge voters' commitment

Hatfield even uses a ranking system to label how committed someone is to his party. Number 1being firmly committed, number 2 is "probably," number 3 is undecided and number 4 is someone who is voting for another party or is ineligible to vote.

Meanwhilein Windsor-West, Liberal candidate Rino Bortolin firmly believes it will be a tight race between himself and NDP incumbent Lisa Gretzky.

With a start time of around 10 a.m. Wednesday, Bortolinplans to see as many front doors as he can until the sun sets.

"Elections are won and lost sometimes by one vote," said Bortolin.

"A lot of people have written us off and we look forward to proving everyone wrong."

On election day, Bortolin said his campaign will likely have more than 100 volunteers knocking on doors, calling supporters and even driving voters to the polls.

"Everybody who told us that they were going to vote, and vote for us, we will be bothering them all day until they get out to vote," he said.
