The street sign dedicated to Ramones lead singer Joey Ramone is the most stolen sign in New York City, according to civic officials.

The street sign dedicated to former Ramones lead singer Joey Ramone is the most stolen sign in New York City, according tocivic officials.

The sign, which reads Joey Ramone Place, has been stolen four times since it was installed in 2003, the city's transportation departmentsays.

To keep thieves at bay, it was recently raised 2.4 metres, putting itaboutsix metres above street level.

Most similar signs arethree tofour metres up.

Former Ramones drummer Marky Ramone told the New York Post newspaper he worries that the tribute sign will be too high for some fans to see.

"Maybe they should find a better way to attach it," he suggested. "Now you have to be an NBA player to see it."

Joey Ramone Place is located at the corner of Bowery and East Second Street in Manhattan, near the deceased punk icon's New York home and the now-defunct rock club CBGB.

Seth Solomonow from the city transportation department said signs for Broadway, Wall Street and Love Lane have also been frequently stolen.

New York City has about 250,900 street signs.
