Lady Gaga gets 13 nods for MTV video awards

Lady Gaga has won a leading 13 nominations for the MTV Video Music Awards, a record for nominations in a single season.

Lady Gaga has won a leading 13 nominations for the MTV Video Music Awards, a new record for multiple nominations in a single season.

Justin Bieber, the Stratford, Ont.-raised teen sensation, earned his first nomination, for best new artist, as the Video Music Awards nominations were released Tuesday by MTV.

Rapper Eminem earned eight nominations, mostly for cuts from his latest album Recovery.

The video of the year category pits Eminem's Not Afraid against Lady Gaga's Bad Romance and Telephone.

"I'm so honoured for all the little monsters and self-professed freaks of the universe, to have more VMA nominations in a single year than any artist in MTV history," Lady Gaga said in a statement. "Ironically, I'm even more proud it's an unlucky number: 13.

"Along time ago the world told me and my little monsters we would never be heard, together we changed the rules. God put me on Earth forthree reasons: To make loud music, gay videos, and cause a damn raucous. Thank You MTV!"

Other nominees include newcomer Ke$ha, veterans Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Katy Perry, Usher and indie band Florence and the Machine.

The prizes will be awarded Sept. 12.
