Sondheim revival takes 5 Olivier Awards

The revival of Stephen Sondheim's musical Sunday in the Park with George has won five awards, including best musical, at the Laurence Olivier Awards, London's prestigious theatre awards.

Daniel Evans and Jenna Russell,stars of the showwhich played at London's Wyndham's Theatre,won best actor and best actress in a musical during the Oliver Awards,held Sunday.

Sunday in the Park with George, competing in an unusually strong season for musicals in London, also won for lighting and set design. Written in 1985, it won a Pulitzer Prize after its original New York production.

Monty Python's Spamalot, which had been nominated for seven Oliviers, ended the gala on Sunday night in London with none.

Rufus Sewell was named best actor for his role in Rock 'N' Roll, a Tom Stoppard playabout a Czech activistbattling for personal freedomunder communism.

Tamsin Greig was named best actress in the role of Beatrice in Shakespeare'sMuch Ado About Nothing at the Novello Theatre.

Arthur Miller's The Crucible at the Gielgud Theatre won two Oliviers best revival and best director for Dominic Cooke.

David Harrower's Blackbird, a controversial work about two people discussing an affair they had in the past,commissioned originally for the Edinburgh Festival, was named best new play.

An adaptation of John Buchan's The 39 Steps by Patrick Barlow won best new comedy.

Best supporting actor was Jim Norton for The Seafarer and best actor in a supporting role in a musical was Sheila Hancock in Cabaret. Cabaret also took the award for choreography for Javier De Frutos.

The English National Opera received two awards for Jenufa best new opera production andoutstanding achievement award for soprano Amanda Roocroft.

The best new dance production was the Royal Ballet's Chroma, featuring songs by the White Stripes orchestrated for ballet.
