Suicide Squad trailer emerges after gritty Comic-Con leak

A movie trailer for supervillain ensemble film Suicide Squad has emerged from studio Warner Bros. Pictures, replacing a grainy, pirated reel that leaked over the weekend.

The high-fidelity,official version premiered at San Diego Comic-Con as an exclusive and was pirated, according to the studio.

"Warner Bros. Pictures and our anti-piracy team have worked tirelessly over the last 48 hours to contain the Suicide Squad footage that was pirated from Hall H on Saturday. We have been unable to achieve that goal. Today we will release the same footage that has been illegally circulating on the web, in the form it was created and high quality with which it was intended to be enjoyed," said Sue Kroll,WB president of worldwide marketing and international distribution.

"We regret this decision as it was our intention to keep the footage as a unique experience for the Comic Con crowd, but we cannot continue to allow the film to be represented by the poor quality of the pirated footage stolen from our presentation.

Suicide Squad is based on the DC comic series created by John Ostrander that follows a platoon of criminal misfits (also known as Task Force X) enlisted for high-stakes black-ops missions in exchange for reduced prison sentences.

The film features a high-wattage cast, including Will Smith as sharp-shooting assassin Deadshot, Jared Leto in a macabre turn as The Joker, Margot Robbie as the maniacal Harley Quinn, Cara Delevingne as the seductive Enchantress and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, a powerful antagonist.

The trailer, underscored by an ominous cover of the Bee Gees tune I Started a Joke, sees Robbie and Oscar-winner Leto steal the spotlight as a psychopathic pair. Check out the nightmarish teaser above.

Shot in Toronto and directed by David Ayer, Suicide Squad is slated to open August 5, 2016.
