Bannock. Thistraditional Indigenous fare is a staple at family gatherings, festivals and food trucks. As a friend and bannock lover said to me, when it'sin the house, the whole family gets excited.

But, for those on the road this May long weekend and with no kitchen in sight, there are plenty of places to get your bannockfix, from plain traditionalto add-ons like buffalo steak and the infamous Indian Taco. Here are five bannock jointsacross Canadato check out:

Native Delights food truck: Edmonton

Despite scaling back from a full restaurant to a food truck, Native Delights is more popular than ever. As a bonus, they're known for even more than their bannock. (Native Delights/Facebook)

Native Delights is a rising star in the Edmonton cuisine scene for the past four years. On their website, owners say the secret to their world famous bannock is "L-O-V-E". Native Delights was once a full restaurant, but recently scaled back to a food truck. Despite the smaller operation, their popularity is bigger than ever, where at one point a former city mayor went straight to the homes of the owners to request their bannock and beef stew for an upcoming event. It's safe to say you won't be disappointed. The Native Delights food truck can be found on 108 St. and at the next local powwow.

Kekuli Cafe:Merritt and Westbank BC

A highway stop in beautiful B.C., Kekuli Cafe has two locations in Merritt and Westbank. The wife-husband duo's slogan "Don't panic ... we have bannock!" brings the survival food of their ancestors to the modern age with new combinations coming constantly.

"We have sugar and cinnamon sugar bannock, which you can get at powwows, but we're always inventing flavours like cream-cheese Skor or Saskatoon berry," says co-owner Sharon Bond-Hogg. She adds good bannock takes a lot of "tender, loving care."

Roundhouse Cafe:Montreal

Sitting in a quaint octagonal building in Montreal's Cabot Square, Cafe Roundhouse brings the Indigenous and non-Indigenous community together. Thecafe employs Indigenous people who used to be on the street and even has its own "pay it forward" program, where customers can pay for a cup of coffee or a plate of bannock for the next person who might not be able to afford it. It's your bannock, but socially conscious.

Chiniki Village:Trans Canada Highway en route to Kananaskis

Calgarianswill have seen Chiniki Village on the way to and from Canmore and Banff. Serving not only bannock but also traditional meats, Chiniki Village is known for their buffalo steaks (that you can wrap in bannock). The joint tragically went ablaze from arson in 2012, an unprecedented loss to the Stoney Nation. But, arising from the ashes, Chiniki Village is back to serve bannock to weary travellers returning from a day in the Rockies.

Giant Tiger: Bannock in a Box

Admittedly, it waswas perplexingwhen I came across this on Twitter. Found in the frozen section of Giant Tiger, a discount supermarket all overCanada. It's a convenientbannock-on-the-go with six, pre-cookedpieces easily heated up.

"I'm not saying we are the best, I'm sure your mom or grandma's is, but this is just something a little more convenient for everyone to enjoy," said Bannock in a Boxco-creatorAnthony Faraci. Our resident "bannockologist" Tim Fontaine gave the boxed bannock a taste and said itwas "not bad."
