Iran ends review of Zahra Kazemi case

Iran's Supreme Court on Tuesday ended itshearing into whethera new investigation into theprison death of Iranian-Canadian photojournalist Zahra Kazemi should be held.

The court's decision is expected by next week.

Lawyers for the Kazemi family had requested an investigation into her July 2003 death, arguing there were irregularities in the initial investigation and that the death was a homicide and not an accident as originally ruled.

Kazemi, 54, was arrested while photographing a student-led protest outside a prison in Tehran.

She died of a fractured skull and brain hemorrhage while in detention.

Two years ago, an Iranian court acquitted an intelligence agent accused of beating her and ruled Kazemi died from a fall after her blood pressure dropped during a hunger strike.

Iran refused to allow Canadian observers at the agent's trial and rejected Ottawa's request to return Kazemi's body.
