Moscow airport safety officials fired: reports

President Dmitry Medvedev has fired a top official ofRussia's transport police in the wake of the suicide bombing at the country's busiest airport that killed 35 people, according to news agencies.

The reports did not say immediately why Medvedev had dismissed the official, who oversees transport police for the region that includes Moscow.

The chief of the transport police division at Moscow's Domodedovo Airport and two officers were also fired Wednesday, by Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev, media reports said.

The dismissals come one day after Medvedev publicly blamed airport security failiures for Monday's suicide bombing, saying managements needed to be held accountable.

"What happened shows that obviously there were violations in guaranteeing security," Medvedev said in comments released by the Kremlin on Tuesday. "And it should be answered for by those who make decisions there and by the management of the airport."
