Prince Harry, actress Meghan Markle engaged

In their first joint interview since announcing their engagement, Prince Harrysaid Monday that he and American actress Meghan Markle hope to start a family in the near future.

Harry made the comments in an interview with the BBC that aired hours after it was announced the couple was engaged earlier this month in London.They will tie the knot in spring 2018, according to a statement released by Prince Charles.

For her part, Markletold the BBC that "as naive as it sounds," she had no idea how intense the interest would be once the two began a relationship. She said the couple faced "a lot of mistruths," and she quickly decided not to read any media reports about them.

She said "of course it's disheartening" that there was focus on her background as the daughter of a black mother and a white father.

The couple appeared before photographerson the grounds of Kensington Palace in London earlier on Friday.

"Thrilled, over the moon," said Harry as he and his fiance posed forphotographs.Asked when he knew Markle was "the one,"he replied: "Thevery first time we met."

Markle, who wore a white coat, said she was "so very happy"as she clutched her future husband's arm tightly during theirbrief appearance. They left with their arms around each other.

Meghan Markle was raised in the Los Angeles area. Her father is a TVlighting director for soaps and sitcoms, her mother a yoga instructor and psychotherapist.

Prince Charles, visitinga school Monday in southern England, said the news was "very good," and added he was "thrilled for them both. They'llbe very happy indeed."

Harry and Markle,who is divorced, met in July 2016 in London "through friends," Markle told Vanity Fair in September.

In thatinterview, Markle made it clear the world's attention on her romance did not faze her.

"I'm still the same person that I am, and I've never defined myself by my relationship," she said. "The people who are close to me anchor me in knowing who I am. The rest is noise."

She also told the magazine that the two were "in love." The frank and open statement about a royal relationship was seen as abreakwith tradition.

But their relationship was not always that public.

They long chose to keep the details of their relationship mum to the press and the public, despite intense and often intrusivespeculation from the U.K. tabloids.

In November 2016, Harry issued arare statement to criticize the media for intrudinginto the private life and relationship withMarkle, saying the press had subjected herto "a wave ofabuse and harassment."

"I sometimes still feel I am living in a goldfish bowl, butI now manage it better," Harry said in an interview with a U.S. magazine Newsweek published in June 2017.

When and where

Dickie Arbiter, former press officer for the Queen, speculated the wedding could take place around mid-April when the Queen and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, are both at Windsor Castle.

He said it's possible the wedding could take place at Windsor Castle's St. George's Chapel, which could easily accommodate1,000 guests andwhere Prince Charles and Camilla attended a dedication and prayer service after exchanging vows at a civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall in 2005.

"Anything bigger would be very expensive and would not be looked upon too well, particularly at this time when we're going through pretty tough economic times as well as negotiating Brexit," he told CBC News.

The couplewill live in London at the prince's current two-bedroom residence,Nottingham Cottage, on the grounds of Kensington Palace.
