Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, daughter of Prince William and Kate, turns 1

Princess Charlotte, the daughter of Prince William and his wife, Kate,celebratedher first birthday Monday.

Charlotte's birthday on May 2 comesjust a few days after the Dukeand Duchess of Cambridgecelebrated their fifth wedding anniversary, on April 29.

Here's a look back at Charlotte's first year as aroyal.

4th in line to the throne

Royal salutes

The princess cuddles with her toy dog in a photo taken by her mother. Charlotte'sbirth was marked with simultaneous royal gun salutes in London's Hyde Park and at the Tower of London 41 and 62, respectively, honouring a tradition thatcelebrates the birth of every prince or princess, regardless of their place in the succession.

Queen's great-grandaughter

In this official photograph, released in April by Buckingham Palace to mark her90th birthday, Queen Elizabethsitswith hergreat-grandchildren and her two youngest grandchildren. Charlotte, who is sitting on the Queen's lap, is herfifth great-grandchild.

Princess's christening

The Duchess of Cambridgecarries her daughter into the Church of St. Mary Magdalene on the Sandringham Estate for the princess's christeningon July 5, 2015. The christening was conducted by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, the spiritual head of the Anglican Church, who also oversaw the christening of George.

Charlotte's godparents

'Perfect' name

The princess's full name, Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, is a nod to her late grandmother, Diana, and her great-grandmother Elizabeth. Earl Spencer, Diana's brother, welcomed the choice of names, saying they were "perfect."
