Mexico: Drugs, Death & Danger

Dozens of people die in Mexico every day due to the ongoing drug war. Just how safe are Canadians travelling to sun destination? CBC News investigates.

Tens of thousands of people drug kingpins and innocent bystanders alike have been killed in Mexico since the government began a crackdown on the drug cartels that dominate much of the country. It's an all-out war, with victims including mayors, military commanders and police chiefs. Torture and decapitation are not uncommon. And there's no end in sight.

Beginning Monday, March 5, turn to CBC News on CBC Television, CBC News Network, CBC Radio One, CBCNews.ca and the CBC News App for Mexico: Drugs, Death & Danger, a series of special reports, led by CBC News correspondent Keith Boag, taking an in-depth look at Mexico's drug war, the consequences and the impact for Canadians.

Monday, March 5

In afeature documentarytitled Mexico at War,CBC's Keith Boag visits Monterrey, a symbol of economic opportunity for Mexico. The city now finds itself in a pitched battle to keep the Zetas drug cartel at bay. Boag joins a patrol of Marines as they investigate the escape of 30 Zetas from prison.He alsotalks to Alfredo Corchado, one of the most highly respected journalists covering Mexico's drug war. The piece also looks at the lure of Mexican tourist centres like Mazatlan and explores whether Canadian visitors are safe.
