Gun violence - part 2

Posted: Feb 1, 2012 11:58 AM ET Last Updated: Feb 1, 2012 11:58 AM ET
Last month I wrote about the growing use of guns in Halifax.

The city set a new record last year with 75 shootings throughout HRM. That's one every five days.

That's on top of a record year for homicides.

The official tally actually rose from 17 to 18 a couple of weeks ago when police ruled the death of 64 year old David Burgess a homicide.Burgess died July 28, 2011 after falling down stairs in his home. After detailed medical tests police charged his daughter Vanessa Burgess, 28,  with manslaughter.

It was those disturbing numbers that caused us to create an interactive map to track all shooting incidents in HRM as of January 1st.

The results for the first month are in, and they aren't pretty.

There were eight shootings in January. Of those eight cases, six people were shot (two in one incident); a dog was shot in another; and in the last two, shots were fired at vehicles in Clayton Park, and a shot was fired during a home invasion in Dartmouth.

That puts Halifax on pace for another record year. At this pace we could see more than 90 'shots-fired' cases before the year is over.

Police tell us getting guns off our streets is a top priority.

We will continue to post all shootings on our website throughout the year, so we can all see the impact gun violence is having in our neighbourhoods.
