9 Easy Environmental Activities For Earth Day

By CBC Parents Contributors

Apr 13, 2016

Earth Day is coming!

Any day is a good day to teach kids about the environment, but Earth Day is extra-special: kids get a chance to be part of a worldwide movement about protecting the environment.

Here are nine of our favourite Earth Day activites. Whether you're looking for something messy, something tidy, something for quiet indoor play or an outdoor aventure, we've got you covered!

1. Sandwich Bag Compost Experiment

A simple activity that teaches little ones about the importance of composting. Why create more garbage when so much can be composted, added to your garden and actually help grow more food?

It can be tough to teach kids about composting because it takes so long. This experiment takes place on a much smaller scale.

2. Wildflower Seed Bombs

Celebrate Earth Day by making super-fun seed bombs that resemble our planet. Kids will love making them, planting them and (most of all) witnessing the results when the wildflowers start growing!

You can use these wildflower seed bombs to spread beauty all over: in your backyard, in places that are looking barren and unkempt or along roadsides. What better way to honour our Earth?

3. Make-Your-Own Terrarium

Kids can learn how to care for living plants by making their own terrariums — plus, they can reuse their own toys and decorations to give each terrarium an extra special touch!

4. Frog Pond Sensory Play

Get messy for Earth Day. This activity is a great way for kids to learn about the life cycle of a frog. You'll need dirt, rocks and little frog figurines.

5. Nature Bugs

Head outside for an Earth Day treasure hunt: collect bits and pieces of nature that can be reused to create little bugs and creatures. The possibilities are endless!

6. What Can You Compost? Activity

If your kids have questions about composting, this hands-on activity provides answers! Create a composting station where kids can sort household items — what can be composted? What can't?

7. DIY Field Notebook

Take the whole family outside on an outdoor expedition and record what you see in a field notebook.

Our friends at Scout And The Gumboot Kids put together some simple activities to help families get hands-on with nature.

8. Woodland + Wildlife Play Set

Bring the outside in with a customizable woodland and wildlife play set.

Collect rocks, twigs and other items outside and combine them with animal toys you already have at home. An easy way to transform normal things into an opportunity for imaginative play.

Print a scavenger hunt and take it on an outdoor adventure! A perfect way to explore nature with all your senses on Earth Day.
