Yarn Rainbow Wall Hanging

Let's do a rainbow craft!

This cheerful yarn rainbow wall hanging is a wonderful craft for school-aged kids who have mastered measuring, cutting and tying. Made from a stick, some yarn and a few cotton makeup pads, it will add a welcome pop of colour to any bedroom, playroom or classroom.

What You'll Need:

  • stick (12 to 15 inches long)
  • sandpaper
  • blue paint
  • paint brush
  • yarn
  • scissors
  • glue
  • cotton makeup pads (cotton balls would work too)

How It's Made:

To start, clean your stick of any dirt and debris, and make sure it’s nice and dry. Smooth any sharp bits with sandpaper, and give the stick a coat or two of paint.

While your paint is drying, select the yarn you want to use for the bands of colour in your rainbow. Cut your yarn into 30-inch strands, and cut about 10 strands for each colour section of the rainbow. Bundle by colour and keep these bundles separated.

Feel free to mix various shades and weights of yarn for texture and interest. For example, we combined a dark chunky yarn with a lighter, thinner yarn for the blue section of our rainbow, and it looks terrific.

Next, fold the coloured yarn bundles in half, and lay them out in rainbow order with the looped end at the top and the loose ends at the bottom. Lay the painted stick across the top of the bundles.

To secure the yarn to the stick, grasp the loose ends of one of the coloured bundles, bring them up over the stick and push them through the loop. Pull to create a snug knot. Repeat with the rest of the colours.

Tying the yarn to the painted stick in loops

Adjust the knots so they’re all facing the same way and to close any gaps between colours. Comb your fingers through the yarn to smooth it, and trim any noticeably long pieces.

To add the cloud, arrange several cotton makeup pads across the bottom of your rainbow. When you’re happy with the arrangement, lift each one carefully, squeeze some glue on the back, and press it down firmly on the yarn.

Allow glue to dry for a few moments, and then tie a piece of yarn to each end of the stick for hanging.
