You & Me Mini Glitter Rainbow Snow Globe

By Megan McChesney, Kids' CBC Staff

Sep 4, 2014

Our new show You & Me is so colourful and so much fun and so full of rainbows, we've been thinking a lot about catching a few rainbows of our own! This mini glitter rainbow snow globe project is the perfect way to make sure there's a ways a rainbow close at hand.

You'll need:

  • glue gun
  • toothpicks (optional)
  • plasticine
  • clean baby food jar
  • glycerin (available in the first aid section of drug stores)
  • glitter

Instructions

1. Paint the lid of your jar with craft paint, or cover it with colourful electircal tape.

2. Cover the lid of the jar with blue plasticine.

3. Add a small piece of white plasticine to support the rainbow.

4. Roll out five rainbow rays in red, orange, yellow, green and purple. Each will be about 3 inches long. Attach this to the white support piece by pressing firmly. Use clipped ends of toothpicks to secure, if desired.

5. Make two clouds from white plasticine. Give them both faces out of black plasticine. Attach these to the base and rainbow by pressing firmly. Again, use toothpicks to secure, if desired.

6. Once your rainbow is assembled, test out the positioning by screwing it into the jar and seeing if you like how it looks. Reposition and adjust as needed.

7. Fill the jar with water and a few drops of glycerin. (The glycerin helps the glitter float a little slower.)

8. Add about a teaspoon of glitter. Some glitter will stick to your plasticine rainbow, be forewarned. We think this looks quite pretty.

9. Run a small bead of hot glue onto the lid of your snow globe. Before it dries, quickly screw the lid (and rainbow) into place. These jars tend to be pretty water-tight when screwed on tightly, but the glue will prevent any possible spills.

You're done! Enjoy the rainbow and glittery fun!
