Canadiens' Andrew Shaw taunts Capitals as NHL pre-season continues

There was no shortage of action in the NHL pre-season with five Canadian teams on the exhibition schedule on Tuesday.

Let's take a look at how they did:

Canadienstakefight-filled affair with Capitals

Torrey Mitchell scored twice as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Washington Capitals 5-2 in a penalty-filled NHL pre-season game on Tuesday night.

Alexander Radulov, in his Habs debut, Paul Byron and Nathan Beaulieu also scored for Montreal (1-1-0). Beaulieu and Greg Pateryn each had three assists.

Radulov wasted no time getting his first goal in a Canadiens uniform, scoring on the power play at 4:12 of the first period.The Russian, who signed a one-year contract with Montreal in the off-season, got the blade of his stick on Pateryn's shot from the point to deflect the puck past Vanecek.

The game was chippy and penalty-filled, with both teams combining for more than 50 penalty minutes.

The bad blood between both teams reached its boiling point late in the second period when Andrew Shaw knocked Connor Hobbs face-first into the end boards.

Caps forward Nathan Walker took exception to the hit and dropped the gloves with Shaw.

The Habs winger was given 20 penalty minutes on the play and a game misconduct. The Capitals bench was visibly irate as Shaw skated past them to the dressing room.

Kulak leads Flames over Jets

Brett Kulak scored a pair of goals and added an assist as the Calgary Flames blanked the Winnipeg Jets 3-0.

The 22-year-old defenceman assisted on Freddie Hamilton's first goal of the game and then took advantage of a mishandled puck behind Winnipeg's net to make it 2-0 in the second period.

Kulak, a native of Edmonton, then upped it to 3-0 at 13:10 of the third after tapping the puck with his skate onto his stick and flipping it past Jets goalie Eric Comrie.

Goalie Chad Johnson played the first two periods for the Flames, stopping 21 shots. David Rittich had his turn in net for the final period and made six saves.

Sabres need OT to top Senators

Jake McCabe's goal 1:32 into overtime lifted the Sabres to a 3-2 win over the Ottawa Senators.

McCabe's goal accounted for the only lead for the Sabres. Nicholas Baptiste and Derek Grant also scored for Buffalo.

Chris Neil and Derick Brassard scored for Ottawa. Robin Lehner made 37 saves.

Andrew Hammond started for Ottawa and made 20 stops. He was replaced by Matthew O'Connor, who allowed two goals on 11 shots.

Sharks rally past Canucks

Kevin Labanc's goal 1:05 into overtime lifted the San Jose Sharks to a 3-2, come-from-behind win over the Vancouver Canucks.

Tommy Wingels set the stage for Labanc's winner by scoring the tying goal with 23 seconds left. Barclay Goodrow also scored for the Sharks.

Bo Horvat and Sven Baertschi scored for Vancouver.

The San Jose goaltending tandem of Troy Grosenick and Mantas Armalis did not have to work especially hard during their game action. Grosenick made seven saves in the first two periods, and Armalis stopped six shots in the second, third and overtime.

Vancouver's Michael Garteig took the loss after allowing three goals on 13 shots in the second, third and overtime periods. Richard Bachman started for the Canucks, and stopped all 20 shots he faced.
