World Cup: Who's in, who's out

Sixteen teams have secured spots in the knockout stage at the World Cup and sixteen teams have been eliminated. Here's a look at who's in, who's out and possible scenarios at the World Cup.

Sixteen teams have secured spots in the knockoutstage at the World Cup and sixteen teams have been eliminated. Here's a look at who's in, who's out and possible scenarios at the World Cup.

2018 World Cup Soccer Stats Centre

Group A

Uruguay locked up first place with a 3-0 win Monday over Russia, which advanced anyway after winning its first two matches. Uruguay will play Portugal on Saturday in Sochi. Russia takes on Spain on Sunday at Luzhniki Stadium, the larger of the two Moscow venues. Egypt and Saudi Arabia have been eliminated.

GroupB

Spain emerged atop the group after simultaneous, frenetic finishes in the night games on Monday. Spain got a late equalizer in a 2-2 draw with Morocco and Portugal had a 1-1 draw with Iran. The 2010 World Cup champion Spaniards will play the host Russians to start the knockout stage, while reigning European champion Portugal will play Uruguay. Morocco and Iran have been eliminated.

Group C

France won the groupafter a 0-0 draw with Denmark on Tuesday,finishing with two wins and a tie. With the draw, theDanes also advance with five points. Peru finishedthird after defeating Australia2-0 on Tuesday,while the Aussies finish last with just a single point through their three games. France will face Argentina, the second-place team from Group D, in the Round of 16. Meanwhile, Denmark will play top-seed Croatia.

GroupD

Croatia defeated Iceland 2-1 on Tuesday, finishing on top of Group D with a perfect 3-0 record. Argentina staved off heartbreak in the form of a Marcos Rojogoal in the 86th minute against Nigeria. With the 2-1 win, Argentina secures second place in the group. Nigeria (third) and Iceland (fourth) are eliminated. Argentina will face France in the last 16, while Croatia will take on Group C runners-ups Denmark.

GroupE

Brazil defeated Serbia 2-0 on Wednesday, securing first place in Group Eand a meeting with Mexico in the Round of 16. With a 2-2 draw against Costa Rica, Switzerland takes second in the groupand will meet Sweden in the knockout phase. Serbia (third) and Costa Rica (fourth) are eliminated.

GroupF

After a dominating 3-0 win over Mexico, Sweden finishedfirst in Group F with six points. Mexico also advanced in the second spot after Germanystunningly lost 2-0 to South Korea. South Korea finished third with their win, while Germany placeddead last. They arethe third straight defending champion to fail to advance to the knockout stage in the followingWorld Cup Spain in 2014 and Italy in 2010 were the other two countries. Sweden will play Switzerland in the Round of 16 on Tuesday, while Mexico meets Group E leader Brazil.

GroupG

Belgium defeated England on Thursday to grab top spot in the group. Tunisia and Panama were out of contention prior to Tunisia's 2-1 win in the final group game. Belgium will now play Japan on Monday while England will meet Colombia on Tuesday.

GroupH

Colombia defeated Senegal 1-0 Thursday to advance to the World Cup knockout stage. Senegal became the first team ever eliminated by a new tiebreaker number of yellow cards.

Poland defeated Japan 1-0 in the other group match. Japan and Senegal were tied on all tiebreakers except "fair play points," based on yellow and red cards. Japan had four yellow cards, Senegal had six.
