March Break is on the horizon and summer is only a few months away, so why not plan a getaway to the land of a familiar cinematic classic? No, we're not recommending a staycation and a movie rental. How about a visit to some of the real-world locations where iconic films were shot? If you're so inclined, you could rent a room at Luke Skywalker's deserted homestead or play some ball at the Field of Dreams. 

Lord of the Rings - Various Locations - New Zealand

Lord of the Rings fanatics might already know that they can take a quest of their own to New Zealand to see some of the breathtaking landscapes from the trilogy. Parts of Hobbiton, Mordor, Mount Doom, Rivendell and Fangorn Forest - and many other scenes from the films - were shot in actual New Zealand locales. The Department of Conservation has protected these locations as natural and historic heritage sites, and their website provides detailed information on the GPS coordinates, with links to Google maps.

John Hughes' Films - Various Locations - Chicago

John Hughes is known for incorporating his North Shore Chicago hometown into many of his films, from 'The Breakfast Club's Shermer High School to the church where Jake proposed to Samantha in 'Sixteen Candles'. But nothing highlights the landmarks like the iconic shenanigans of Ferris Bueller, Cameron Frye and Sloane Peterson. You can follow in their footsteps and see some well-known parts of Chicago: Sears Tower's Sky Deck, Wrigley Field, the Art Institute of Chicago and the annual German-American parade on Dearborn Street. But even those monuments of Chi-Town can't compare to the ravines and glass walls of the Frye residence. Located in Highland Park, it's where a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California was once kept in pristine condition... Oh yeah.

Star Wars - Tatooine - Tunisia

A dream vacation to the plains of Tatooine isn't that far, far away either. Tatooine's Earth-bound counterpart can be found in the northern African country of Tunisia. All of the desert scenes from the original trilogy and the prequels were shot here: the 'Phantom Menace' pod-racing scene was partly filmed at Chott el Gharsa, and the Skywalkers' home in 'A New Hope' was built on the salt lake at Chott el Jerid.

Field of Dreams - The Field - Dyersville, Iowa

If you go there, you can see it. Maybe that phrase doesn't have quite the same ring as "if you build it, they will come", but it's true: in Dyersville, Iowa the legendary cornfield from the Academy Award-nominated 'Field of Dreams' is open to the public. A day at the field can be reserved right here. The field itself was built specifically for the Kevin Costner film, and the 193 acres have remained in the same condition since its 1989 release thanks to Don and Becky Lansing. Don grew up in the two-bedroom house that features in the movie, and the couple tended the grounds themselves since it was released, welcoming 65,000 visitors each year at no charge.
