Answering your CES questions: HD DVD vs. Blu-ray

By Peter Nowak, CBCNews.ca

CBCnews.ca's reporters covering the Consumer Electronics show (CES) in Las Vegas are letting you be the interviewer - ask us what you'd like to know about announcements or the buzz on the show floor, and our reporters will do their best to find out.

Claudio from Ontario asked: Will there be a definitive winner between HDDVD and Blu-ray any time soon? With certain movie studios only releasing films on one format, it's making the choice a difficult one. I haven't purchased a hi-def player as of yet because of that (... that and the thought of having to slowly start replacing my 100+ DVDs ...) I'd rather not purchase a dual format player, but I may have to consider it if this is going to be a long, drawn out affair.

Well Claudio, at this point, it certainly looks like Blu-ray has won. With the announcement by Warner Bros. on Friday that it will release movies only on Blu-ray, the supporters for HD DVD are few and far between.

Only Paramount and Universal are still backing HD DVD, along with Toshiba and Microsoft. Pretty much everyone else is behind Blu-ray. Toshiba is clearly stunned and did not mention any HD DVD plans at its press conference on Sunday.

Apple is also rumoured to be throwing its hat into the Blu-ray ring at Macworld next week. If that happens, it's curtains for HD DVD.

It will be interesting to see whether lawsuits and regulatory probes start to fly, as this was definitely not a battle that was settled by consumers - both formats were selling relatively well at retail.

Thanks very much for the info Peter :)
I also heard the news that Warner was backing Blu-ray and it can't help but tip the scales in Blu-ray's favour. I hadn't heard about the Apple rumour but it certainly is a juicy morsel. Hmmm, I wonder if Apple will pass up the opportunity to stick it to their rival. It will be interesting to see what happens but in the meantime, I will be shopping around for a Blu-ray player. Thanks again.

I was ready to buy both an HD and Blu-ray player but will now just go for Blu-ray. There is only one Blu-ray player on the market that is the second generation standard to accept the new interactive features that are starting to appear on the Blu-ray discs so the selection is very limited at this point. The player is one from Panasonic. All Blu-ray players manufactued after October 1 2007 must conform to this new stanard so other new models will really get introduced now as a result of the Warner Bros. decision.
