Answering your CES questions: Solid state drives

By Peter Nowak, CBCNews.ca

CBCnews.ca's reporters covering the Consumer Electronics show (CES) in Las Vegas are letting you be the interviewer - ask us what you'd like to know about announcements or the buzz on the show floor, and our reporters will do their best to find out.

Good question, Ken. Solid state drives are definitely looking like the future of storage, given their smaller size, better power usage and durability.

The problem, of course, is price. Sandisk is currently supplying laptop makers with SSDs that can store up to 72 gigbytes, but these are up to nine times more expensive than a regular hard disk drive.

It'll be a few years yet before we start seeing any sort of ubiquity, but the trend is inevitable. Even hard-core hard drive maker Seagate is getting with the program - the company has a hybrid disk/SSD drive on display here.
