Answering your CES questions: The vibe around Blu-ray

By Peter Nowak, CBCNews.ca

CBCnews.ca's reporters covering the Consumer Electronics show (CES) in Las Vegas are letting you be the interviewer - ask us what you'd like to know about announcements or the buzz on the show floor, and our reporters will do their best to find out.

Erik asked: With the announcement that Warner Bros. is dropping HD DVD and going Blu-ray exclusive, what is the general vibe at CES in Vegas regarding the ongoing battle between the two hi-def competitors? After speaking with exhibitors at the show, can you provide insight regarding one side emerging as the winner? Or currently in the lead.... What do companies seem to be more supportive of?

Thanks for the question Erik. The vibe here at CES is definitely that the format war is over and Blu-ray has won. Sony is resisting gloating, with an executive telling me they were maintaining a "quiet confidence" about the whole thing.

Toshiba and Microsoft are basically alone in continuing to push HD DVD. Everyone else is aggressively behind Blu-ray.

One thing's for sure - if almost none of the movie studios are releasing films on HD DVD, the format can't possibly survive.

I was under the impression that Paramount and Universal were both exclusively HD-DVD houses. That;s only two of the big studios, but they're two heavy players. I think it might be too early still to call this game. I like Blu-Ray, muself, but I'm not putting down my money on a player just yet...

Sony is maintaining a strict NO adult movie policy on bluray..that's going to help HD-DVD big time.

Also, Dreamworks is exclusively HD-DVD, and the players are cheap..as low as $150.
