PS3 coming on strong

By Peter Nowak, CBCNews.ca

If recent video game sales data from the NPD Group is any indication, Sony's Playstation 3 is starting to come on strong. The console had four games - Rock Band, Call of Duty 4, Guitar Hero 3 and Burnout Paradise - in the top 20 for January sales in Canada, the first time the PS3 has accomplished that feat. Rock Band and Call of Duty were also sixth and seventh, respectively, matching the console's double entry in the top 10 of November, where the PS3 versions of Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty 4 sold well.

This must make Sony very happy because in order to have games rank in the top 20, there must actually be consoles out there for people to play them on. Indeed - the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 over Christmas, according to NPD, and has made up some ground on its rivals. Sony has now sold 342,400 PS3 consoles in Canada, compared to 736,400 units of the Xbox 360, which had a year headstart. Nintendo is in second with 689,500 Wii units sold so far (the Wii was released at about the same time as the PS3).

Electronic Arts earlier this month predicted the PS3 will outsell the 360 this year. Given that Sony has definitively won the high-definition DVD war and the PS3 is the only Blu-ray player on the market that can have its software upgraded (by virtue of its internet connection), EA's prediction just may pan out. Also helping matters will be several big exclusive game releases, such as Gran Turismo 5 and Metal Gear Solid 4, which Sony just announced will hit stores by the end of its second quarter. If the PS3 has bounced back somewhat simply with games that are available on other platforms, the exclusive titles should give it a huge boost.

Speaking of exclusive titles... Wii owners who are missing out on the Rock Band phenomenon (the 360 version was January's top-selling game in Canada, according to NPD) could get some relief from Disney, which is producing a game that at this point sounds like a knock off. Ultimate Band will allow Wii and Nintendo DS owners to use their remote and stylus, respectively, to play songs by some of the "very biggest names in rock, alternative, popular, emo and indie rock music" (let the debate on exactly what "emo" is rage on). Unfortunately, Wii owners will have to wait till Christmas for Ultimate Band.

I doubt its going to be a band game worth playing, this ultimate band. I shall wait and find out this Christmas.

Well it's no surprise Sony is going to jump out on top. It's only a matter of time. Hopefully Sony comes out with some good original PSX titles.

people keeps on say GTA 4 is gonna help PS3. But please do understand that yes it will make more people go buy ps3, but at the same time, it does not necessarily help ps3 gain any grounds on xbox or wii. GTA 4 is not an exclusive title to ps3. If someone does not own any console now and want to get one because of GTA4, it is very possible that they will go to xbox, mainly because of the extra contents.

It's not over yet, considering 360 has fairly consistantly outsold the PS3 for 14 or so months. 1 good month for the PS3 can hardly be considered a trend.

I think the fact that the 360 has more than doubled the total PS3 sales (in Canada) with less than twice the amount of time is interesting. The Wii has sold more than double what the PS3 sold. I don't think you could call the PS3 sales strong. Mild is a better word. Or perhaps disappointing.

4 games in the top 20 is a coming on strong?

I'd hate to see what "weak" sales look like.

Rock Band has also been announced for the Wii. EA missed a huge opportunity by not releasing it at the same time as others. The game perfectly fits Wii's core demographic. EA has not released a date for it yet however.

It may not be over, but this is the rise of Sony. Face it; this is going to be one of those high end, Pepsi VS Coca Cola Rivalries that will last till the end of time. Sony has indeed won the HD-DVD / Blu-ray disk wars, which could boast a lot of popularity for the PS3. PS3 is taking the smart approach to releasing it's consople; by tweaking bugs, and fixing system malfunctions, etc...unlike the XBox 360, which they had to recall cause of certain issue with the rotar thingy (Too early in the morning for me to remember! :P ) spun the CD's way to fast and melted them. Sony has something the XBox lacks; expirence. PSX, PS2 and now PS3, which span almost 10-12 maybe even more years then I listed. I know when I have enough moolah, I wil purchase a PS3, because it seems they never fail to surprise me or the consumers. I really don't mind waiting, because the wait will definitly be worth while. Once again though, it is a matter of preference. Nobody is the same.

It'll be interesting to see if Sony can hold on to this momentum for at least the next few months. It's true there's still quite a bit of ground to make up but you need to start somewhere and this is a pretty good start for the new year. I wonder how long it'll be before MS releases a Blu-Ray add-on for the X360? I can't imagine they'd let Sony keep that edge for very long.

It also surprised the heck out of me that Rock Band wasn't released for the Wii at the same time as the other versions. What could make more sense than Rock Band on Wii?

Boy, being able to trick people into buying the same console three times for the same types of games over and over? Hats off to Sony for targeting the 13 year old angsty teen audience.

If Microsoft wanted to release a Blu-Ray player, they would have to license the technology from Sony, as they developed and own the technology. I can't see Sony doing this for a competitor. At least not cheaply.

The fact that Microsoft backed the loser in the HD movie war speaks volumes about Microsoft's knowledge (or lack thereof) of the console gaming market.

I fear that in the not to distant future, people who raced out to buy an XBox 360 will find themselves in the same predicament as the people who raced out to buy a HD DVD player. Left with nothing but an inferior, $500 paperweight.

If Microsoft wanted to release an add-on
Blu-Ray DVD player, they would first have to license the technology from Sony, and I would guess that Sony may be somewhat hesistant to do this for a competitor. At least not cheaply.

I think the fact that Microsoft backed the losing format in the HD DVD war speaks volumes to their understanding (or lack thereof) of the current HD Game/Movie market.

With Playstation 3 sales coming on strong, and new titles coming out weekly, I think that its only a matter of time before XBox 360 owners end up like their HD-DVD player counterparts...left with an obsolete, $400+ paperweight.

Sorry 360 owners. You bought the wrong console.

Stephen, Sony doesn't own the rights to Blu Ray. They aren't the sole developers. They are one of something like 5 or 8 companies that make up the Blu Ray Consortium. I recall reading before that MS said if Blu Ray outdid HD DVD, they would consider a Blu Ray add on.

I also don't see how their backing of the HDDVD drive shows any understanding/lack thereof the video game industry. The strong sales of the 360, and more importantly, the software should make you reconsider this point. You're speaking very boldly about a console that is in last place, by a fairly significant number.

W0W Truer words ever said! I thought I was the only one that continually saw that in Sony. Almost all Final Fantasy are angst filled. Actually almost all RPG based games are angst filled. All Adventure/action games are pretty angsty aswell. This is the reason why I like Microsoft games or Nintendo because their either serious or fun. Sony just seems to be 'angsty', the console to fuel the 'emo' kids. Boo!

I doubt that would be plausible. Maybe if the add-on was an external CD-rom, put I'm pretty sure the current CD reader wouldn't be able to process the Blu-Ray disc properly. Plus since it the size of Blu ray is far greater then an HD DVD disc, it would need a higher hardrive space on the HD DVD rom memory so it can load the game properly. I doubt Microsoft would join or make a blu ray 'add-on' at this point. They're possibly working on a new CD simular to the HD DVD disc. 360 owners didn;'t luck out really. There are some games SOny will never have the rights to the Microsft has that are some big hitters that could make all the difference. Not mention, as people said earlier; it's only one good month for Sony, anything could happen. Patience is the key here, and time is the factor. The rest lays on the shoulders of Sony to determine the outcome.

How are any of the GTA games ''emo''?
Same goes for GT 2 3 4 and 5?

Anymore more titles? Please feel free to share, because out of PS and PS2's collection the emo based games outweigh the regular games. And if you thought about the storyline of GTA, it actually would be rather emo, only in an aggressive way. Trying to fit in, doing anything for attention? I think...and for one... angst doesn't exactly mean emo Monkey(as it was only a comparison to fuel the emo kids fire), as much as society chooses say it. Out of the three consoles, PS is the angsty teen console, as Xbox is the gorey serious console and nintendo as the family fun fluff system.

I like stirring pots though, I'm a PC player, I stay away from actually having to buy these things, all I do is analize and stir, hehehe.

The user defines the PC, the consoles define the user.

Okay I know this has nothing to do with the Suggestion Blog, but why isn't their ANY hockey games for the Wii? It's not like they need to use the numchuk wii-mote, they could just use the controller. Just wondering why.

Justin, please explain how a game can be "emotional hardcore". I'm all ears.

For one... I don't see 'Hardcore' anywhere and it's 'agressivly emotional'. Big difference.

Emotional agressiveness... is rather better known as a cry for attention, and the player/ person is willing to do anything to gain that attention, but never feels satisfied, so that person is always trying to progress by beating the last stunt, but at the same time feels left out, alone, insecure, etc etc etc...

" Sorry 360 owners. You bought the wrong console. "

Are you people serious ?

I own all three next gen console, so my opinion is not as bias as some of you's I have to say...

All three consoles have their own advantages and downfalls but from a gaming point of view, the Xbox 360 is clearly the better console for a person who only wants to buy one.

With all due respect compare the consoles, Ps3 and 360 especially.

The 360 as the best dashboard, you can access friends lists, personal soundtracks, create private chats and invite friends to your game or join their session, none of these can be done with the PS3 while inside a game.

The PS3 lets you create a custom chat room but you cannot leave the dashboard, which means while you chat with your friend you are looking at a blank screen.... There is no way to look up your friends when you are in a game and no way to invite them in your session. You cant supplement the games soundtrack by music of your own choice, which is a big drawback, in my eyes anyways.

With over 10 million subscribers to Xbox live, its here to stay and its already and overwhelming success.

The PS3 is a great console as well but with one year to tweak its own system before lauching against the competition, some things who needed to be corrected were left as they were, dissapointing...

You do get a decent blu-ray player with the PS3.

But as it stands right now, if youre only going to buy one console, go with the 360, you wont be dissapointed. Xbox live is impeccable.

My 2 cents.

The PS3 does suck badly. Woopy doo, it has a blur ray Hi Def DVD player. GO buy a freak'n DVD if thats want you want. But for real gamers the Xbox or Wii is the way to go.

As a PC player I was surprised and even a little scared at how fun Civ revolution is on the 360. Then I cleared it after 4 hours and thought to myself, ahh the PC is still safe.

Anyways, xbox is the best of the worst. Best shooters, best online play. THe PS3 is over-priced junk.

I have to admit the DS is pretty nice tho...

Growing up I loved the playstation 1 and 2. The games, the graphics, the variety of games. But I was a fool.... The xbox 360 has much more especially the online play, which Playstation 3 cannot compare to. Paying $60 for a year's membership is cheap but you get more than what you pay for. There are some good games that the PS3 has that the 360 doesn't but....it dosent compare....Sorry
