Population: 51,390
Voter turnout in 2006 municipal election: 39 per cent

Located in southwestern Scarborough in Toronto's east end, Ward 36 is bound by Victoria Park Avenue to the west, Lake Ontario to the south, the Danforth to the north, and to the edge of the Guildwood community on the east.

An aging community with more than one quarter of residents between the ages of 54 and 64, the population of Ward 36 declined almost six per cent between 2001 and 2006.

Just over 66 per cent of its residents listed English as their mother tongue; those speaking Tamil accounted for 4.2 per cent of the population and while three per cent of residents listed Urdu as their mother tongue.

Of the more than 20,000 dwellings in the ward, 60.9 per cent are privately owned homes while only 39.1 per cent are listed as rented.

Key Issues

Open race:Ward 36 will have new representation in the next council since long-time Councillor Brian Ashton is stepping down after 26 years. Ten candidates are vying for the seat.

Revitalization:Most residents have backed a proposed plan to convert Markington Square at Eglinton Avenue East and Markham Road into a residential area including high-rise condos. The plan, however, is not without opposition, as some residents are worried about adding further development to an area that they say is already densely populated.

Lake Ontario Wind Farms: Some residents have raised questions and concerns about an Ontario government plan to experiment with offshore wind farms in Lake Ontario. The plan would calls for the erection of huge wind turbines in arcs stretching lake from Ajax to the Leslie Street Spit.
