Five young Calgarians are being called heroes by police, 911 dispatchers and EMS staff.

The young people were recognized at the Telus Spark on Friday for their quick-thinking and action in emergency situations — the youth called 911 during a crisis situation.

Emilina Kachuk, Maryam Yasir, Laura Campos, Dyllan Domagala and Emily Moreton were all recipients this year of the annual reward. They received a trophy, and recognition from the city's police and fire department.

The recipients are nominated by emergency communications officers who answer 911 calls.

"They deal with many calls every day and every night. And infrequently they come across callers that are young children that obviously demonstrate bravery and the knowledge to know exactly what to do," said Doug Odney, commander, Calgary 911.

Emilina Kachuk, a Grade 8 student in Calgary, she said getting the hero award is "crazy."

"It is scary at first but just don't hesitate to call 911. I was a little afraid too, but I knew it was the right thing to do."

The event was a kick off to National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week (NPSTW) which runs from April 14 to 20. The city said in a release the week recognizes the work of dispatchers who are the "first of the first responders."
