Triple murder suspect accused of gunning down couple in front of boy gets bail

The man accused of three gang-ordered murders including the killing of a Calgary mother and her partner in front of her five-year-old son has been released on bail.

The man accused of three gang-ordered murders including the killing ofa Calgary mother and her partner in front of her five-year-old son has beenreleased onbail on a number of strict conditions.

The conditions includethat he wear an ankle monitoring bracelet while on 24-hour house arrest.

Jimmy Truong, 27, who is charged with three counts of first-degree murder, was granted release by Court of Queen's Bench Justice DavidLabrenz on Thursday afternoon following a bail hearing that began last month.

The evidence presented at the hearing by prosecutor Adam May and defence lawyer Derek Jugnauth is protected by a publication ban, as are Labrenz's reasons for granting bail.

Truong cannot own a cellphone and has alsobeen ordered to stay away from a number of people, several of whom have deep ties to organized crime and to abloody gang war in Calgary that left at least 25 people dead.

One of the people Truongcannot be in contact with is FK gangster Billy Ly, who is facing a conspiracy to commit murder chargein B.C.in connection with aplot to kill the notorious Bacon brothers.

That plot left an innocent man dead in a case of mistaken identity.

Ly was also accused of trying to kill rival gangster and suspected FOB leader Nick Chan, but his charge was stayed.

Notorious FK gangsters Daniel Landry and Shaun Roberts were also named as people with whom Truongis prohibited from contacting.

Boy witnessed shooting

In September 2016, Cuc Lung and Quang Tran were gunned down in a caroutside their home on Redstone Manor in northeast Calgary.

Lung's five-year-old son was in the backseat of the vehiclebut not injured. Her other child was in the house with family members.

Tran died in the car and Lung was rushed to hospital with a police escort but later died of her injuries.

Investigators said Tran was known to police and the shooting was believed to be gang related.

Less than three weeks later,PhuPhanwas shot and killed outside his home in the Edmonton community ofRapperswill.

Police said at the time that the shootings were believed to be targeted attacks orchestrated by an organized crime group.

According toCBCNews sources, Tran had connections to the FOB gang, whileTruongis connected to the FOB's rivals, theFK gang.

From 2002 to 2009,at least 25 deaths were connected to the gang war in Calgary between the FOB (Fresh Off the Boat or Forever Our Brothers) and FK (FOB Killers) gangs.

Since then, many of the FOB's higher-ups have been killed or incarcerated.

Truongdoes have a criminal history but not for violence or offences related to organized crime. He was arrested and charged with the three murders months after the killings, in April 2018.

The case will be back in court in Augustfor a preliminary hearing to determine whether there is enough evidence against Truongto go to trial.
