Update: On Friday, the jury of nine women and three men sentenced James Holmes to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2012 theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado.

Earlier:

After less than seven hours of deliberation, officials at the Arapahoe County District Court in Colorado announced Friday that the jury in the James Holmes case has reached a decision on sentencing.

The court will convene today at 5 p.m. MDT to announce Holmes' fate -- either the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole.

A death penalty sentence requires a unanimous jury. If just one juror disagrees, Holmes will get life in prison.

Last month the same jury found Holmes guilty on more than 100 counts of first-degree murder or attempted murder in the 2012 Aurora movie theater shooting.
